A House of Cards – Cover Reveal

As the release date for A House of Cards, the third book in The Dreamweaver Chronicles, draws nigh, I’m seeking feedback on the latest cover mockup. If this cover popped up on your screen during an Amazon browse, would you give the book a closer look? All viewpoints, impressions, analyses, questions, and constructive criticisms welcome!

  1. I would use different tarot cards for the card visuals. As a tarot reader, the cards are a bit weak in the visual sense.

    • Thanks for dropping in, June! The images for these cards were taken from a black-and-white long-out-of copyright set and custom colored. While more-graphically lush, most of the currently available decks, are still (at least arguably) subject to copyright, a complication I wanted to avoid.

  2. Hi Darlene, thanks for dropping by! The "block" cards are assembled into what's known as a house of cards--these inherently unstable structures are why we use the term "house of cards" to refer to something that's exceptionally fragile or volatile. The image on the associated card (The Tower) is also a structure that's in the process of being destroyed, which adds an additional layer of meaning. In Tarot-reading parlance, The Tower card means sudden, unforeseen change, adding yet a third layer. The title itself adds a fourth layer. Finally, for a fifth layer, the other two cards represent the story's two dynastic "houses," both of which are facing existential threats. While I wouldn't expect a casual reader to appreciate all these different angles, I do like to provide these sorts of thought-provoking associations for those who get a kick out of discovering them.

  3. Love the overall look. Perhaps it's just me, but my eye was drawn to the card in a block form--if there is some significance to that it's good--if not it seems a distraction. The other area you might look at is the color on the subtitle which is difficult to read.
